Details about Fraternity Rush...
This section serves to educate individuals about the fraternity rush process at UC Irvine.
The term Rush is used to describe the fraternity recruitment process. To rush means to participate in the recruitment process and actively seek membership in a fraternity. Rush and recruitment can be used synonymously. An individual who is rushing is considered a rushee.
The recruitment process for IFC fraternities at UC Irvine is informal, meaning chapters host and market their own recruitment events and rushees are not required to visit every chapter as it may be at other campuses. Some examples of recruitment events that chapters host include: BBQs, poker nights, and sports games. Parties are prohibited during the Formal IFC recruitment period, and are not considered the best environment to get to know one another on an individual basis.
During the academic year chapters recruit two to three times a year. The first recruitment period for all fraternities, Fall Rush, occurs during Welcome Week and Week 1. Most fraternities also have a winter and spring rush and usually lasts for one week. These occur at the beginning of the academic quarters, just as it is in the fall.
During the Formal Recruitment Period, fraternities will always have a booth set up on Ring Road where you can obtain information about their recruitment events and have the opportunity to meet some of the members.
There are 13 IFC Fraternities at UCI which all have their own historical backgrounds, but otherwise stand for the same values in terms of promoting strong academics, leadership, life-long friendship, and commitment to the community. You can visit the Chapters page for a list of these fraternities and links the their websites.
A bid is an invitation to become a pledge of a fraternity. Once a rushee accepts a bid they become a "pledge" or "new member" for that fraternity. A pledge becomes an "active member" or "brother" of a fraternity once they have completed their pledge program and are initiated.
